It could be a bad port, or it could be a USB 1.0 port. Can most new devices are USB 2.0 and can now take on more power than 1.0. I would install a new USB card and use the old ports.

You have your iPod to a port that is connected directly to your computer to connect or use a hub that has its own power supply. Even then, there could be problems with having enough power. USB powered hard drives are a power hog, and you should never be more than one hard disk to a single hub or not receiving power. Your iPod is trying to get power through the USB cable, it is a hard drive. unless you have the Nano, which has a flash or microdrive.
